USING TRICARE FOR DRUG REHAB

Working out the cost of addiction treatment shouldn’t be a worry when you are seeking help. At OceanRock Recovery we are proud to accept TRICARE at our drug rehab program and more specifically, our treatment for military members and veterans. TRICARE is a worldwide healthcare program for active-duty and retired service members and their families. It is managed by the Defense Health Agency, under the leadership of the Assistant Secretary of Defense-Health Affairs.

Ocean Rock Recovery IS A TRICARE PROVIDER

TRICARE provides comprehensive coverage to all of its beneficiaries. This includes health plans, prescriptions, dental plans, and special programs.

OceanRock Recovery is proud to treat TRICARE beneficiaries and provides military-specific addiction and mental health treatments to those in need. After all, mental health disorders and substance abuse in the military population are all too common.

Because of their wartime experiences, some veterans and active-duty military personnel find themselves living with the symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental health issues. These issues can increase a person’s vulnerability to alcoholism and substance use disorder since substance use disorders occur more frequently among those who have experienced trauma or severe stress.

One study of approximately 600 veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan found that nearly 40 percent screened positive for probable alcohol abuse.

THE HISTORY OF TRICARE

Historically, health care for military personnel and their dependents was provided in military medical facilities, and also through a referral system by civilian medical practitioners in areas where military physicians weren’t available, or in instances of military medical facilities were overcrowded. Active duty military personnel always enjoy priority in military medical facilities.

After World War II and the Korean War, with the growth of U.S. military forces, access to care in military facilities started to become unavailable for military retirees and dependents of active duty and retired military personnel.

To address this problem, Congress passed the Dependents Medical Care Act of 1956, followed by the Military Medical Benefits Amendments of 1966. Both acts allowed the Secretary of Defense to contract with civilian healthcare providers.

In 1993, the Department of Defense announced plans for implementing a nationwide managed care program for active-duty military members, retired military, and their dependents. Under this program, known as TRICARE, the nation was divided into 12 healthcare regions, with a lead agency designated for each region to coordinate the needs of all military treatment facilities in that region.

Seven managed care support contracts were awarded to cover these 12 regions under TRICARE.

Since then, TRICARE has undergone several restructuring initiatives, including re-alignment of contract regions, Base Realignment, and Closure, and the addition of “TRICARE for Life” benefits and “TRICARE Reserve Select” benefits.

On January 1, 2018, the 12 TRICARE regions were consolidated into two large regions, TRICARE East and TRICARE West.
